As seen in the news: a note on a student’s armPosted: October 7, 2010
Scanning my favorite news aggregator this morning, I came across the following story: Grand Prairie ISD aide fired over note on student’s arm
The basic points: an aide wrote a message intended for a student’s parents…on the student’s arm, in marker. Despite the fact that this student carries a notebook that is dedicated entirely to communication between teaching staff and parents. (My sister had one, too, when she was in school.) And, you know, despite the fact that writing on any student’s body as though he or she were a piece of paper is an inappropriate action.
All students – all people! – have a right to bodily integrity. I’m glad that the school district’s choice to fire the aide reflects their agreement on this point.
